If You Saw Bowling For Soup in Concert, You’d Never Know They Were a One Hit Wonder

On Saturday March 13th at the Blender Theatre in NYC, Bowling For Soup had a concert. The two openers were Sexy Heroes and the Dollyrots. The show wasn’t sold out so the venue was pretty empty.
First up to play were Sexy Heroes. Their singer resembled Joel Madden of Good Chartlotte with a voice matching his (Joel’s) mashed with Pierre Bouvier of Simple Plan. Their songs were amusing as ever, they seemed to have been written from tidbits of found journals written from ages 10-14. The best song of their set was a song entitled, Robert Downey Jr., which was about how they’d go gay for, you guessed it, Robert Downey Jr.. They are actually a really great band and I suggest you check them out. Their sound is different and their songs are funny yet great. Look it’s a MYSPACE LINK!
Next was the Dollyrots. The singer is a girl who happens to look like Dolly Parton and Courtney Love’s love-child. Weird. And the guitarist who was male kind of looked like Kristen Stewart, when she’s playing Joan Jett in her new movie The Runaways, again weird stuff. Her voice is kind of Barbie-esque, I doubt she would’ve made it past hollywood week in American Idol to be honest. It was a three person band and the music playing was too ~*hard*~ for what was coming out of the singers mouth. I wasn’t very blown away. You can check ‘em out for yourself though, here’s their MYSPACE!
Finally Bowling For Soup were up. Their set made me feel like I paid for a comedy show that just so happened to feature musical performances in it. They cracked the funniest jokes between songs, but the onstage banter seemed to outplay the music, and outrun it. The banter got longer and more random each time it started. I was very amused, but I thought I paid for a concert not a comedy show! Fun fact about Bowling For Soup, they wrote and play the Phineas and Ferb theme song, they even played it at the show. Although they’re known to be a one hit wonder, if you told their fans that they’d probably kill you. Their fans ranged from ages 10 to adults in their 50s, there were more 30-50 year olds there than any other age range. I would definitely advise seeing these guys next time they go on tour. Their stage presence is epic and even though the whole time they’re joking about how old and fat they are, they’ve still got it. Check out their new music on their MYSPACE.
