What girl hasn’t uttered the words ‘I wish he was my boyfriend’? It is a common dilemma, even if you are a chillwave rocker apparently, because Bethany Cosentino, better known as Best Coast has written a song about just that.

Best Coast’s new single ‘Boyfriend’ speaks the common thoughts of young adults everywhere: it is no fun waiting by the phone, the other girl/guy that the ‘girl/guy of your dreams is with always seems better than you, and you now that if you two were together, everything would be perfect. The song is easily relatable and is catchier than a cold in a college dorm; however, Best Coast’s voice seems a little whiny and piney. This adds to the tone of the song, but sometimes it can be a little overwhelming.

In ‘Boyfriend’ Best Coast is singing about how much she wishes a guy were her boyfriend when it is common knowledge that she is happily dating low-fi noise pop heartthrob Nathan Williams of WAVVES. So the question is: If this coast already has her waves what is she whining about?

If all of that is overlooked though and the song is accepted as another discontented catchy pop love song, then it does its job almost perfectly.
