Why Am I The One
Fun.

Why Am I The One - Fun.

From having their hit single “We Are Young” covered on Glee to being featured on a super bowl commercial, Fun. has had a very exciting past few months. The release of their sophomore album, “Some Nights” is set for February 21st and it seems to have all the elements of a chart-topping pop album.
Unlike the classic sound of “Aim and Ignite”, this album has songs like “It Gets Better” that uses pop-rock drum beats, which in my opinion don’t really suit the sound of this band. It’s a weird feeling to hear clap-tracks and autotune surrounding the sound of frontman, Nate Ruess’ amazing voice in the song “Stars”. But, at the same time they still have heartfelt theatrical-sounding songs like “Why Am I The One” and “All Alone”.
I appreciate how this album is able to reach a common ground between the original sounds of the band while approaching a widely accepted sound fit for the radio. As a fan of the format and fun., I hope they achieve the success that they deserve from this album.

Fans got in line for The Wanted’s NYC concert debut starting at 3AM on the day of their show. Eager for the band to take stage, chants of “Wanted” rang throughout the sold out Irving Plaza from the second their fans entered the room. The moment the Wanted took the stage at Irving Plaza with their song Behind Bars, the crowd was going crazy. Fans young and old were clapping their hands and singing along to songs from their first and second albums. The crowd of American fans had been waiting forever to finally see this band perform and it did not seem like they were let down. Although they’re classified as a boy band, they proved their musical talents by playing the instruments to a cover of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. The atmosphere of this concert and the band’s stage presence, as well as their catchy songs made me want to become a fan. The Wanted will be performing in six more American cities before launching their 2012 United Kingdom Arena Tour, you won’t be sorry to check them out!

Top 5 Albums of 2011 by Hana Selly

1. Ellie Goulding – Lights

Even though this record originally came out in the UK last year, it was released over here in the states this year. Because I have not gotten sick of it between when it was originally released until now, I made this my top choice of album for 2011. Seeing her live three times this year (if you include an acoustic performance) only reaffirmed her talent for me. Her strong but calming vocal abilities placed with the rhythms of electronic pop make this record a very exciting one.

2. Foster the People – Torches

This album came out just as the summer time rolled around so it easily became a very memorable record. Between playing this cd in the car and hearing Pumped Up Kicks any time I turned the radio, listening to Torches became a habit. I think the amazing production of vocal tracks, beats, and instruments make this album a long time favorite for me.

3. Mat Kearney – Young Love

I only discovered Mat Kearney about a year ago, so when this album came out in August I was really excited to hear what kind of new music he had produced. The tracks are generally uplifting with exciting beats and rhythms. I think what makes these songs so catchy is the fact that Mat “raps” some of his lyrics, creating a new kind of pop.

4. Drake – Take Care

I always love the singles and records Drake puts out (even if this is only his sophomore full-length album). Part of it has to do with how Drake can, not only rap but can also sing melodic R&B style lyrics. From start to finish the songs and rhymes both flow, making this album another one of my favorites of 2011.

5. Fitz & the Tantrums – Pickin’ Up the Pieces

I think it’s really awesome and unique how this band doesn’t use guitars whatsoever. After hearing their single, MoneyGrabber on the radio I downloaded this album and it held up in comparison to their single. It greatly reminds me of the 1960s Motown style, which is one of my favorite eras of music.

Why Dont You Love Me
Hot Chelle Rae

Why Don’t You Love Me - Hot Chelle Rae featuring Demi Lovato

Hot Chelle Rae released their sophomore album, “Whatever” this past Tuesday. It’s an overall upbeat record that includes their hit song “Tonight Tonight”, as well as their second single “I Like it Like That”.

Hot Chelle Rae steps out of their comfort zone by collaborating with well-known hip-hop artists like New Boyz and Bei Maejor. This may either be a hit or miss for Hot Chelle Rae, as boys that play pop rock and wear skinny jeans are not the image that comes to mind when thinking about rap music. I do however enjoy their song, “Why Don’t You Love Me” featuring Demi Lovato. Unlike their songs featuring rappers, this song clearly shows collaboration between Ryan Follese’s voice and Demi Lovato’s voice. There are overlapping parts and they seem as if they are singing directly towards each other instead of just inserting a rap segment in the middle of a song.

Although there is no depth in their lyrics within this album, they keep the listener interested with exciting beats and an endless supply of shouting. I’d recommend this album to you if you enjoy listening to bands like The Summer Set or The Downtown Fiction.

Gotta Be You
One Direction

One Direction got their start on X Factor last year. Although they did not win the competition, they have been growing in popularity all over the world. Especially by stealing the hearts of many teenage girls with their voices.

Their debut album “Up All Night” comes out tomorrow (November 21st, 2011) in the United Kingdom and features their chart topping single, “What Makes You Beautiful” as well as many other captivating songs like their second single, “Gotta Be You”.

The voices of Harry Styles (17) Niall Horan (18) Zayn Malik (18) Liam Payne (18) and Louis Tomlinson (19) make up One Direction. Their unique voices are distinguishable throughout every one of their songs, making their album very addictive.

This adorable group of guys is sure to be a success in both the UK and America so catch them on their United States tour with Big Time Rush in 2012!

Lost In The World (feat. Bon Iver)
Kanye West

Leading up to his album release today, Kanye West has been releasing a different single every week on his official website free of charge. Included in this are some tracks from this album, including my favorite track, “Lost in the World”.

Although this album is placed in the “hip-hop” genre, bits of every category can be heard throughout. Featuring artists like Rihanna, Bon Iver, Jay-Z and even Elton John this album does not disappoint when it comes to collaborations. It has samplings of Black Sabbath and Smokey Robinson, just to name a few and also contains a great mixture of strings and percussions.

Listening to the album from start to finish gives you a new experience each time. It starts off with a story told by Nicki Minaj and ends with a spoken word excerpt by Gil Scott-Heron. In the midst of soliloquies are some amazing songs with descriptive and powerful verses. My opinion is that this is his best album OF ALL TIME!
